For the Trinchero Family—and the California wine industry—1948 was an important year. At that time, a young Mario Trinchero left New York City and traveled west to the Napa Valley with his wife and three children. With little more than fierce determination and a vision for achieving the American Dream, the Trinchero family established the Sutter Home Winery in 1948.
Step back in time, and you’ll find a struggling winery that scraped by on a modest income for decades. It would take a bit of luck and good fortune to make Sutter Home a household name. In fact, it was a fortuitous accident that catapulted the winery to global recognition. In 1972, a “stuck” fermentation left a touch of residual sugar behind, opening the door for second-generation vintner Bob Trinchero to create the world’s first White Zinfandel, a delicious pink wine with a hint of sweetness.
Today, 1948 by Sutter Home honors our founders and the success they have built across three generations. This unique collection of wines, crafted entirely from California grapes, offers the perfect accompaniment to a wide variety of foods. Each sip of 1948 is a celebration of dreams, hard work and good luck.
