Outlier takes you to places you’ve never been before. With bright minerality, fresh fruit flavors and low alcohol levels this food-friendly wine is versatile and expressive – perfect for your next dining adventure.

Extraordinary things happen when you get off the beaten path. You’re free to blaze new trails and boldly follow your dreams into the unknown. Nobody ever changed the world by following the crowd. You only do so by embracing change.

This trailblazing spirit guides everything we do at Outlier. Because we believe wine is made in the vineyard, we deliberately seek out unique, outlying vineyards where the grapes develop a character all their own. We let the wines be the wines they were always meant to be—authentic, true, and infused with the spirit of adventure.

Certified organic grapes. Certified sustainable wine. Eco-conscious packaging.

Winemaker, Derek Rohlffs

Winemaker Derek Rohlffs grew up exploring untamed places: California’s redwood forests, the Sierra Nevada, and the roiling surf of the Pacific Ocean. Nature became his teacher, his religion, and his muse. Following his passion, he pursued environmental studies at UC Santa Barbara and later winemaking at UC Davis before embarking on a career that allowed him to continue to explore—and protect—the natural world.

With an unwavering commitment to organic farming and sustainable winemaking, Derek seeks out special vineyards where he crafts authentic Pinot Noir that is true to its roots, wine that speaks to a specific time and place.

Long Valley Vineyard

Something magical happened when Derek Rohlffs decided to veer onto a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. In a far-flung vineyard with grazing sheep, he happened upon the perfect place to grow Pinot Noir that would push boundaries and defy expectations.

The 2022 Outlier Pinot Noir is a delicious wine produced from a single, organically-farmed vineyard in the upper reaches of Spring Valley, a narrow ravine just east of Clear Lake. The cool micro-climate at Long Valley Ranch allows for the slow ripening that is so critically important when it comes to producing balanced Pinot Noir.

This outlying CCOF-certified vineyard is the only one for miles around. A mix of Pinot Noir vines were established in 2015, including Dijon clones 114, 115, 667, 777, and 943. Long Valley Ranch is off the beaten path but the 10 mile drive up the dirt road leading to the vineyard is worth it—and then some!

Sustainability

For Outlier, sustainability is in our DNA—it’s not just what we do, but it’s who we are. That’s why we do things organically, using innovative regenerative dry-farming practices, natural pest management, and minimal intervention during fermentation. Even our approach to packaging is sustainably-minded.
